That is also a very interesting observation. Oyster thought it was because they didn't have alcohol, therefore no distillation and no steam to harness or even puzzle about.

I just saw a History program about the Israelites under Moses and Joshua. The premise they promoted was that the Israelites were not actually slaves of the Egyptians but were actually mercenary soldiers, and had a very militaristic talent. Moses was credited with being a tactical and strategic genius who knew the country from 40 years of wandering and used it to great advantage over the Egyptians. Joshua 'fit the battle of Jericho' as an extermination and gave no quarter, according to this program.

I love to watch the History Channel, but I take everything with a grain of salt. When there are thousands of years with an incomplete record, almost any theory can take root and prosper.

When there is not even a written history and many cultures, like the Anasazi, died out without a survivor.

I've dealt with the Salish Kootenai Tribe because it controls the shore and surface of the lake where we have a family place. They are very reasonable as long as you treat them with respect and don't try to jack them around. They can be helpful, even. My Dad always had good relations with them, and we have tried to keep that up.

Native Americans might not have had technology and motivation to advance beyond hunter/gather/agrarian methods, but one thing they are NOT is dumb. They were masters at what they did.

My guess is that Diamond contributed some important analysis to the subject at hand. I'd guess that he was trumped by Sowell.

And, yup, "Tough to find what was really going on".

Most of the native Indians were farmers. Jared Diamond also points this out. But farming villages were terribly susceptible to imported disease, and many villages died out from measles or smallpox before they even met a white man. One infected Indian who had met one entering the village was enough. The state of the Indians at the point of first contact with whites was anything but undisturbed.
