From the article: "Google then analyzes the data from set-top boxes to determine exactly which ads were watched or skipped, with a second-by-second breakdown."

Sorry Google, the fact that an ad wasn't skipped does not imply it was watched. For that matter, the fact that a person is sitting in front of a TV when an ad is on does not even mean it was consciously watched or of any relevance.

Ad slots are synchronized across channels for the most part, and even if you flip to another program while there are ads on your primary program, the secondary program is running ads too.

Seems to me the data proves nothing, and it's a coin toss which ads you linger on during the ad slots. Maybe you pick up a magazine while ads are on, and leave the channel the same. The fact that the ads played out probably has no relevance.

One thing they *could* provide is which ads are so annoying that few people ever let them play out. In other words, *any* other ad is better than sitting thru the annoying one. I think Google is focused on the wrong end of the spectrum ;o).
