If we are going by the opinions of economists - The great majority of mainstream economists also disagree with the idea that a massive tax increase would be good, or neutral for the economy, or that it would have insignificant negative effects. Reich, is hardly in the middle of mainstream economic thought.

As for your quote of Makiw, so what? He has somewhat different opinions that I have, or than the typical Republican, but in his own words he favors "smaller government, lower taxes, and greater reliance on free markets", which is what I fight for not any view that happens to get accepted by the Republican party.

Not really unorthodox, and much closer to mainstream economic though than Reich's plan.
