Re: How is saying "too much spending is the main problem" an attitude that will contribute to causing us to have "an ever bigger and ever more voracious big government"?

Because --- while it's certainly true, by definition even --- that 'spending is the problem'... by REJECTING substantive STRUCTURAL REFORMS that appear to be the minimum required to ever rein in this massive problem, you practically *guarantee* it's continuance.

(After all: chronic federal over-spending has been a thoroughly bi-partisan affair, ever since Keynes' economic theories became ascendant. It's practically the ONLY thing the Republicans and the Democrats [by their actions when in power] 'agree on'.)

You shoot down the one possible structural cure to what is a fundamental problem in our structure of governance... and you'd better be prepared to see more of the same! (And, that includes pointless diversionary carping and political red herrings periodically dragged in to keep the public confused.... :-)

Re: " Basically a balanced budget amendment is pretty week as a way to restrain the growth of government. I'm not saying it has no effect but it isn't a very strong one."

Suggest something, ANYTHING, that offers to be stronger.

(Go on... I'd love to know!)

Just please don't come back with any crapola about how you are going to reform the nature of mankind, or see that the little Angels inside us all are going to be released, or that there is some magnificent 'fearless leader' just over the horizon that is going to save us all from our bad habits... if we will just send him a campaign contribution first and then vote him into power.... :-(

No, Tim... for a STRUCTURAL FLAW in the design of the system, you need a STRUCTURAL SOLUTION.
