Amelia,
I have friends in Alberta and from what I have heard from them the economy up there is not depressed at all, closer to a gold rush due to the gas, oil and especially oil sands activity.

So I would assume "the RE market there would put the US to shame" is meant in a positive way for the Albertans.

Last I talked prices to them the construction cost for a home was $200/sq ft, about twice what it is in Pennsylvania.
