re: You apparently seem to think that the difference is enough to be a major factor in our health care costs, and that absent it our costs would be similar to Europe's or Canada's.

Come on man, we've had this circular debate MANY times before on this and other threads. You know that there are a bunch of factors that I site that would save money with single payer, not just a more efficient single system. Don't give me this "You apparently seem to think... that absent it our costs would be similar to Europe's or Canada's" crap.

You know better...

I agree with you on malpractice. It's a huge cost driver and an issue that must be dealt with in any reasonable attempt at health care reform.

Defensive medicine is probably a bigger cost, and at least the milder versions of it are so ingrained that it would be done as a matter of course, not something that would draw a massive amount of complaints.

I think you are underestimating this one.

As you know, I'm caring for my dad, who is under the hospice model where malpractice considerations are minimal, if present at all. No one will sue if the patient dies. While I'm still identifying some waste, it's trivial compared to a non-hospice scenario.
