>>I think $1.50 against the euro is in the cards. The dollar could bounce back viciously before that, as everyone everywhere is bearish. There needs to be someone on the other side of the trade. One of the great rules of trading is that when everybody is on the same side of the investing boat, the boat is going to turn over.

Of course, things could bounce back. Nothing goes in a straight line forever. However, sometimes fundamentals do count.

If your bidding over a piece of used underwear lying in a dusty dirt road, most folks will value it accordingly (99.99%?). Pretty much everyone will be on the same side of the trade. The fact that everyone bets against it does not make it valuable.

I don’t understand why many economists say that the consumer is alive and well? We have heard warnings from retailers of all types and the Retail HOLDRS (RTH) down 0.4% year to date, and the poster child for luxury retailing, Coach (COH) is down 31% since reacting positively to the FOMC rate cut in September. To illustrate the extremes, NutriSystem (NTRI) is down more than 50% since the September rate cut, with McDonalds (MCD) up 15% to a new all time high of $58.56 on Friday. I guess consumers have canceled their weight loss programs in favor of cheaper Big Macs.

Gasoline prices seem to have decoupled from crude.

Still under three bucks a gallon in Florida with crude over $90.

How long can this disparity persist?

Except for the Quants, who have nothing but disdain for anyone who can think for themselves.....
