China has about 400 million living in "cities" -- not all of the other 900 million are working the farm -- they live in smaller villages scattered about and engage in a measure of subsistence farming and sometimes other work as well. The movement of several hundred million of them into truly urban lifestyles will not dent farm production. Indeed, farm production could do just fine with using only a much smaller fraction of the current farming labor force.
