They could stand pat, it would be an easy way for them to tank gold ... what would the general market do, especially if there came more ugly news out of the dodgy mortgage business - could Merrill Lynch go belly-up, what an interesting idea eh, that would shake things up in a way no Enron ever could ... if they don't cut now they'll have to cut more later, maybe in between meetings and look both stupid and weak, either that or they grab some guts, doubt that will happen, there is no Volcker in the room
