But I will admit that it works differently in some apps. In iTunes it's really weird. Because they provide a random screen saver choice, they should ipso facto also provide the ability to customize it? I think that is distinctly a matter of preference that may be shared by very few people. It's obviously logical to you, but it doesn't really follow for me. ;-) As for the drive icons, they appear in the order in which they mount. I can't help you with that one.
