Re: "...but for what purpose?" To revitalize their social conservative movement, establish that the G.O.P. - as currently constituted - 'can't win nationally without them', to bask in a surge of off-year campaign contributions, talk radio ratings and whatnot... and be in a striking position to retake at least on of the houses of Congress in 2010, and the Presidency in 2012. (With the social conservatives holding the whip-hand, that is....) At least, I believe that is the thought process. (A Rudy win, however, would expose them as Paper Tigers on the national political scene... banish them, defeated and rudderless, to the political hinterlands.)
