We were about to publish an “Interview with Andy Gustajtis”, but due to regulatory issues we cannot publish it at this time. In lieu, Andy has graciously agreed to write a little piece on his thoughts on solar power:

“Well David, I understand we’ve got ourselves a bit of a problem. The interview we agreed to do today is not going to be issued because of regulatory requirements.

However, not to leave you high and dry and to give Debbie a bit of a heads-up since you are traveling, what I have recommended is that perhaps you do a short piece on solar. I understand that it certainly seems to be out of keeping with oil and gas and mining, which is what you normally concentrate on, but bear with me – I don’t think it’s as far fetched as it seems.

As an oil and gas analyst, I have been a student of supply and demand for 30 years now and I can tell you categorically, that peak oil is all around us and that the $100 oil scenario seems like an inevitable development of that and it is not going to go away.

This is not a product of a bunch of hedge funds that have cornered the commodity market – this is a true supply/demand situation. OPEC is full-out, OPEC is unstable, OPEC is not to be counted on and they are not going to give away oil at a cheap price now that they’ve realized the world has no problem working with $80, $90 or $100 oil.

The reality is that high oil prices now will create a huge impetus to look at alternative energy in a much more aggressive form than in the past and solar has a lot going on for it. You will not be able to build an oilsands plant in downtown Toronto or in Beijing or in L.A., it’s going to have to be in Fort McMurray, but you can build a solar park in downtown Beijing, downtown Toronto or downtown L.A. and you can produce the electricity at exactly the same time of day when the air-conditioning load is the highest. It makes such intuitive sense.

It’s staggering that human beings have taken so long to figure it out. Part of the problem has been costs – you just couldn’t justify the costs of doing that. Today, costs are getting within reach.

This afternoon at 4:00 ET, we’ve hosted a virtual conference with three Canadian solar companies each playing in a specialty area of this industry, each offering something that could conceivably shake the foundations of this industry dramatically in the coming years. I think this is a very, very exciting area and I think that the three companies – Arise Technologies, Opel International and Sustainable Energy offer some very interesting opportunities. Their power-point presentations are on their websites.”
