BTW, who pioneered and/or popularized the "flagship" store concept?

Tower Records - NYC store with multiple stories open 24 hrs?

The 4 story Nokia store in Shanghai sure sounds bigger than the typical Apple Store.

Also, how many "flagship" level stores does Apple have and have planned? I'd guess the New York Fifth Avenue location counts as one. Any others? Besides self reporting, what would be a good criteria to designate a store a flagship? Very large area in square feet or retail space? Dominant relative presence in the mall/neighborhood/city?

The Nokia Flagship store in Manhattan is pretty lame, IMO. It's reported to be on Fifth Avenue, which is a huge shopping area. But, it took me a half hour to find it because it's actually in a skinny storefront just off Fifth Avenue, on 57th Street. I must have walked by it three times before I noticed it. It has three floors but not a lot of square footage. Lots of duplicate products. I think I was the only customer when I visited.

The Apple store is a block away. They probably get a 100 visitors for every one visitor to the Nokia store.

Nokia Flagship Stores

<< Nokia is in Shanghai first. Would be interested to see where the 7 open and 18 planned Nokia flagship stores are scheduled and how they compare Apple Store in size and locations. >>

There are seven Nokia Flagship Stores currently open ...

Moscow, Chicago, Hong Kong, Helsinki, New York City, Mexico City, and Shanghai.

Next to open is the Regent Street store in London which will be its largest to date (1,000 square meters) followed by Sao Paulo in spring of 2008 (the 9th).

Upcoming launches beyond that are planned for Paris, Madrid or Barcelona, Milan, Istanbul, Munich, Singapore, Dubai and Tokyo, with no further stores planned for the US at this time.

The recently opened Shanghai Flagship store supplements 170 direct Nokia operated stores and more than 40,000 other retail outlets carrying Nokias on the Mainland.

<< BTW, who pioneered and/or popularized the "flagship" store concept? Niketown? Virgin Records? Sony? Disney? >>

I'm not sure, but the base Nokia concept was suppoedly modeled on Niketown.

Flash -

I know Apple considers the store at The Grove in Los Angeles a flagship store. It's two stories, and in a very prominent location.

But that's a good question.
