The cliche du jour concerning US coal is that we are the Saudi Arabia of coal with the Federal government the biggest owner, followed by a limited partnership [don't recall its name] not available for investment by the hoi polloi, then Peabody Coal [BTU] as no. 3.

As usual, the cliche du jour disappears after only a slight scratch at the surface. A whole lot of the Fed's coal reserves are not presently available for mining:

I like NRP. Might stock up on some. I don't like FRD at all. Too many forex and operational issues plague it.

China should be self-suficient in coal. It faces enormous environmental and safety challenges, however. The environmental issues spill over across the Chinese border. Dealing with this second hand smoke will be China's ultimate foreign policy challenge, not Taiwan and not Tibet. The South Koreans and the rest of the Asians, and the U.S. West Coast, are being affected not to mention the millions of Chinese who are closest to the problem.

All coal users need to work towards zero emissions power plants. I should think that any companies with technologies which reduce the environmental impact of coal usage will do very well. I'm looking for the best of breed.

To cope with rising currency? Increase productivity! Of the 5% growth that agricultural production posts per year, according to the minister, greater productivity is responsible for 3.5%. He also spoke about the greater global consumption of food and about favourable conditions that Brazil has to supply this demand. As an example, Stephanes mentioned China, where consumption of food grows 10% a year. Brazil already exports 30 million tonnes of food to the Asian country.

Country must make third leap in agriculture, says minister

Reinhold Stephanes, the minister of Agriculture, defended Brazilian investment in agroenergy research and in greater productivity. He made the statement during the delivery of the Embrapa Journalism Award, in Brazilian capital Brasília, yesterday. ANBA journalist Isaura Daniel won in the Internet category.
