I'm certain that the Coast Guard has outposts in the Aleutians. Dutch Harbor is a pretty major fishing port, and i'm sure it has a military contingent or two. My uncle was at Dutch Harbor with the Seabees. I never heard too much about it. The Army Air Corps had bases in the Aleutians too. When the Japanese were driven out, it was miserable for both sides. I don't think too many Japanese survived that. I know little about military matters, but by looking at the globe I can see that they must be strategically important.
