Actually the FAO Schwartz store had been there for many years when the company closed it due to bankruptcy, I think. The space was empty for a long while, and the reconstituted FAO Schwartz then re-opened, after emerging from Chapter ??

The Apple store is in the GM plaza in front of the GM building, just a few feet from FAO. If you remember, the GM building stands where the old Savoy Plaza Hotel was located and then torn down.

>>Didn't FAO Schwarz have a flagship location there? Might it be where Apple is situated now? I think FAO Schwarz still has their Las Vegas store, which is also a good city (Vegas Strip) to have presence. Despite any losses that might come from NYC location, I think that closing that location will mark the demise of the FAO franchise.<<

Flash -

The FAO Schwartz Fifth Avenue flagship store is still there, just steps away from the Apple store.

I was referring to the Los Angeles The Grove location that FAO had some years ago, but shut down during hard times. What was in The Grove's Apple Store location before Apple took over?

FAO didn't shut down NYC despite the loses, and even today, I wonder if the NYC store itself is profitable today (gotta count the high rent/opportunity cost). It's such a landmark for FAO that I think it is integral to the store. Some stores are like limbs that can be sacrificed, but "flagship" stores aer more like vital organs. The NYC FAO Schwartz is like its heart and in many ways the Fifth Avenue Apple Store has achieved similar standing. I'd hate to see the day that store shuts down or is sold off. Hopefully not in my lifetime :-) I can't see any other store have so much symbolism, especially due to the glass cube in front. Of course if a grander store is created somewhere, then maybe the glass could go without a major disaster.
