You hit on the best long term solution for home heating/AC, and that is a geothermal heat pump. You pump heat out in the winter to heat the home, and you pump heat into the ground in summer to cool the house. INCREDIBLY efficient and you get hot water for "free" if you set it up right. If I didn't have a 96% efficient furnace, and if I couldn't cool my whole 2500 square foot house with a 11,000 BTU window unit, I would be putting a system in.

Tommaso thinks he's a kook? I wrapped my entire house with aluminum foil before siding it. That and low-E windows are how I can cool 2500 square feet easily with less than 1 ton of A/C. When my neighbors asked why I was wrapping the house in foil I told them it was to stop the alien mind probes!

I think my home might be too "tight" now. I finished my conservation measures this summer and my wife has been sick since we started buttoning up the house a few weeks ago. If she stays sick for another month I will need to get a heat exchanger and vent fan. Hope she gets better
