The market for health insurance isn't the only relevant market. Profit incentive motivates a great deal of innovation in drugs, devices and procedures.

Changing the subject from the payment system.

Does it work as well as if the consumer was cutting the check themselves? No. In some cases it works almost as well, in some cases it isn't even close, but even in those cases it doesn't mean there is no benefit from market forces, just less benefit.

How vague can you get? "Just less benefit" is really next to no benefit... you know that.

re: And the issue isn't just with highly specialized "ups and extras", but rather with coverage a lot of people are going to want, unless the basic coverage is surprisingly lavish. And if it is so lavish, there goes your plan for lowering costs.

You love that "lavish" word. What, the un and under insured are going to complain?

No, I would suggest a basic single payer plan that covers everyone. As I said it might not be perfect... you might even have to wait a bit for a hip replacement.

But the basics would be covered, and you wouldn't go broke if you got cancer. And if the wealthy, or the semi-wealthy want premium insurance above and beyond the basic, they could buy it. It would probably be cheap as the catastrophic monkey would be off the backs of the insurance companies. Or they could just pay extra for "premium service".

Does it really sound so bad?
