Waiting for specialist obviously depends on the seriousness of the problem so it varies.. I have been referred to specialist once or twice by my doctor.. Appointment was within 2-4 week period.. On the other hand, if it is elective, most common one I know is knee surgery for a friend who was on wait list for quite a while while limping along.. Eventually it got done of course with no cost to him.. Another person I know was scheduled for Quadruple bypass and then they moved it up and got it done quickly, within couple of days, because they figured they could not wait.. They guy's recovery was quite good and he was out of the hospital by 4th or 5th day and when I saw him after about 3 weeks, could not even tell he went thru all of this.. So as they say, your mileage may vary..

However, no matter how you slice the problem, I would rather be paying 96 bucks a month for a couple for health care insurance (prescriptions and dental come out of your pocket with some claims with your income tax) and have the peace of mind knowing what my upper limit in terms of cost.. The difference in life expectancy and mortality rate are such that for the price, I can live with it.. lol.. Once you are in the twilight of your life, longevity is over rated if you are muddling thru serious health problems, suffering your self and dragging your family along for the ride.. By that stage, peaceful and fast is what one would wish for..

FWIW..
