True. I was throwing a bone to the "I'm a neo-con who doesn't give a shit about anyone but myself", free-rider, tragedy-of-the-commons crowd. For us conservative folks with old-style Republican values, I like the idea of being self-sufficient from an energy standpoint. If oil-shale helps us do that and we can extract that oil without destroying the local environs and spewing intolerable noxious emissions into the air, then I'm all for it.

However, I much prefer that we don't find any easy answers to finding more oil, which prolongs the life of internal combustion engines. I much prefer that oil stays high for the next couple of decades. That will make it inevitable that technologies like electric vehicles get perfected and mass marketed. So I like anything that keeps oil prices high. It's speeding up the day that we can say goodbye to oil as our energy of choice for cars.
