I don't think it matters much in the long run. If we had a one party system we'd still see the continuum of candidates from liberal to conservative running in each race. If the Republican party collapsed, I doubt all the conservatives would stop voting or start wearing beads and joining communes. It might eliminate some of the silly partisan extremism in government but there's a fair chance that it wouldn't make any difference at all.
