I saw a Science channel show on brain function recently. They compared enhanced MRIs of mono and bi-lingual people. The brain segregates multiple languages.

I had to learn some old English for a class in college (history of the English language), it's pretty much incomprehensible. Chaucer is middle English and difficult enough as things stand.
