France is already running largely on nuclear energy, and there is no reason why the US can't. The problem is that it will take decades to get there (decades that we have lost since the environmentalists killed US nuclear power).

Its not just the environmentalists who are against nuclear power. Its Americans in general who have put the kabosh on more nuke plants. Rightly or wrongly, Chernobyll has had a very strong impact on Americans' perception of nuclear power. Not saying its correct but its the reality.
