Drug trafficking routes in Arab countries 'must be mapped'

Dubai: A report on UAE's efforts to combat drugs during 2006 and 2007 revealed the seizure of various amounts of drugs which came from neighbouring countries.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police, yesterday chaired the final session of the Arab Symposium for Planning and Strategic Cooperation in Drug Combating which concluded yesterday.

Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Al Shammasi, Director of Drugs' Department at the Interior Ministry, presented a report on the UAE's efforts on combating drugs during a session of the symposium.

He said according to the report, the number of people arrested in drug cases was 3,869 people from 2006 to August 2007. He said most of the people involved in trafficking and peddling drugs were residents of neighbouring countries.

Expatriate labour force to increase by 30% this year

Dubai: The expatriate labour force is expected to increase by 30 per cent this year, thus establishing an unprecedented trend in the country, announced a senior Ministry of Labour official.

Humaid Bin Deemas, Assistant Undersecretary at the ministry, said that there is a monthly increase of 30 per cent in the issuance of work permits and the process is expected to continue at the same rate till the end of this year.

There are 2.7 million workers registered under the Ministry of Labour, but the total number of the expatriate labour force is much bigger as there are people that do not come under the Ministry of Labour, namely domestic helpers, drivers as well as those working in free zones.
