<<<but how do we leap from: "it is a tragedy" to "it is a cost that must be inflicted upon society"? I do lots of good works and contribute to charities of my choosing. Would it be appropriate for me to tell that because I find my local charity to be worthy of my contribution you must pay for it? >>>

Most private charity (not all) is about the self absorbed donor. If the recipient is grateful, that is an added bonus. Private charity will never go away. There is a lot of private charity in the muslim world and in South America. Compare that to government providing safety net to its citizens in Northern Europe.

Charity is one thing, but the concept of a government of the people, by the people, and for the people is something else.

The concept of government is not going away. There are some things government can do better. Just because the current administration has failed does not argue to do away with government. It is better to replace the current government with people that want to govern and are capable of governing.
