"why should the US get involved?"

The SEC claimed jurisdiction.

(After all: he is an American citizen, was acting from American soil. The SEC claims jurisdiction over American citizens where ever in the world the money is generated.)

But, the SEC declined to prosecute... claimed 'no violation of American law'.

The US even refused to uphold the decision of the French Court (refused to attach any of his assets to satisfy the French decision, etc.)
