Edwards joins TV ad war
He's the last major Democratic candidate to launch commercials

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards joined Iowa’s TV ad wars today, months after his rivals started running ads here.

The former North Carolina senator’s minute-long ad features clips of everyday working Americans, whom it terms “heroes.” It shows Edwards on the campaign stump, promising to stand up for those people, and it refers to the recurrence of breast cancer in his wife, Elizabeth.

“Elizabeth and I decided in the quiet of a hospital room — after 12 hours of tests and getting very bad news — what we were going to spend our lives doing, for all those that have no voice,” he says. “We’re not going to quietly go away. Instead, we’re going to go out and fight for what it is we believe in.”

Edwards is the last major Democratic candidate to begin running TV ads in Iowa. He trails his top competitors, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, in fundraising, and his aides acknowledged to reporters today that he probably will not be able to run as many ads as Clinton and Obama will run.

Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, director of Edwards’ Iowa campaign, said the candidate and his staff have focused on building their organization and campaigning in every county. Dillon said that’s why Edwards has stayed competitive with Clinton and Obama in Iowa even though their campaigns have spent a total of about $6 million on advertising here.

Edwards’ aides would not say how much they are spending on the new ad. Edwards probably won’t air as many ads as Clinton and Obama, they said, but the candidate has enough money to compete on the airwaves. “We intend to stay up all the way until caucus day from this point forward. We have the resources to do that,” said Joe Trippi, a national consultant to the campaign.
