My view is that these must have been options that were previously underwater. Looking at the chart, the options were most likely granted in the four plus range. When the price finally went higher, employees exercised their options. A contributing factor could be options that were granted to employees after x number of months or years with the company. Just my opinion, of course. You could look at the proxy to get a better idea of the price range where options have been granted.
