"At the state level, the average weekly wage in Florida grew 0.7 percent from the third quarter of 2005 to the
third quarter of 2006, placing it in the middle of the national ranking at 26"

'Average' can be deceptive. Yes there are a lot of high paying jobs but there are also a lot of low paying service jobs; not a lot in the middle. And cost of living has really gone up.

Not typical, but an interesting dysfunctional place is Key West. Tourist economy, tons of service job, and some of the most expensive property in the country. That coupled with a unique geography that makes commuting difficult to say the least.
