Did he ever permit us right-of-hot-pursuit when we asked for it? No. Would he even let any of out guys QUESTION the most dangerous nuclear weapons proliferator of the past half century? (The guy who sold nuclear weapons technology, designs, and equipment to North Korea, and likely to Iran....) No. He is a Pakistani General --- from the same military/intelligence system that has been (& remains) the main supporter of the Taliban for the last 20 years... and that granted amnesty to Tali and fellow Sunni jihadist fighters when they return from attacking and killing our guys in Afghanistan. When his ISI Chief was caught red-handed having $100,000 wired to Mohamed Atta just ONE WEEK before the 9-11 attacks, did he allow this terrorist ring-master to be turned over to the US for interrogation, for arrest and trial? No. (He protected him and denied us access.) And --- like my post pointed out: He NEEDS the so-called 'terrorist threat' out there in the public consciousness so that he can hang-on to the power which he acquired in his coup. It's a symbiotic relationship, the threat of 'terrorists' and the Dictator's hold on power. (Hell, the political opposition already thinks that Mushariff's Intelligence Service was behind the attempted assassination of his political rival Bhuto....) There are MANY parallels between what is going on in Pakistan today and what is going on in Burma (and, Hell... Egypt too!) --- military Dictatorships trashing Democracy and Democracy and rule of law, and fostering by their very presence EVER MORE radicalism and recruits for terrorist causes. Radical terrorism gains strength in such an environment, where the people's expression of popular will through Democracy is THWARTED by Dictatorship, corruption, and entrenched bureaucracies and military rule. This is analagous to how events transpired in Iran, which brought the fundamentalist Theocrats to power there... Democracy over-thrown and 'friendly Autocrats' installed and the anger of the public and their frustration and desire for change --- ANY CHANGE, after a while --- builds up until the 'friendly pet Autocrat' is over-thrown and truly radical forces take over. Only, in this particular case of Pakistan... we are talking about a nuclear armed nation (that has ALREADY been responsible for selling nuclear weapons technology and supplies to North Korea and to Iran... refuses to allow the US to even question the principals who were behind these proliferations... and who has armed and supported the Taliban, and now al Qaeda types, for decades now....) Supporting a 'friendly Dictator' like that --- who installed himself by coup and now has arrested his country's Supreme Court just as they were about to rule against him, arrested opposition politicians, taken control over news media, and well may have been involved in the recent attempted assassination bombing attempt on his leading rival --- is just ASKING TO LOSE THIS 'WAR'... and lose it BIG TIME!
