"He played us. Like they all do."

Exactly....

Played us like a two-bit fiddle.

That's what most petty Autocrats, would-be Dictators tend to try to do --- tell folks exactly what they expect they WANT to hear while meanwhile clinging on to power with both hands for absolutely as long as they can

And, yes, he has been pretty much worthless as an 'ally' --- his primary goal was just to divert our initial onrush in the 'W.O.T.' just long enough to see that his duplicity would not be exposed enough to draw our reaction.

Pakistan, of course, being one of the two MAIN supporters/provisioners/appologists for the Taliban - Saudi Arabia being the other - but Pakistan's military and Intelligence Service have always been the puppet master behind the Taliban, and with deep sympathies for radical fellow Sunnis and fellow Pushtuns, and OBL-style Sunni jihadists.

It has been an article of national strategic doctrine in Pakistan for decades now... their goal has always been (& remains) a compliant 'Pak-friendly' fellow Sunni-ruled Afghan neighbor to be a barrier between them and their Shia regional rivals in Iran. This is necessary if Pakistan is to have a fig's chance of being anywhere near capable of prevailing in their Kashmir struggle with largely Hindu India... which remains their paramount strategic goal.

"And hindsight is always easy...but you and others have pointed out Mushareff's duplicity time and time again for five years....and what exactly do we have for all that money and support?"

Bush was suckered from the very get-go.

You know... I was sitting here wondering just WHICH foreign leader had been *most successful* in manipulating Bush to secure his own goals and thwart American interests....

Was it Putin, or Mushariff?

(Until recently, based mainly on the larger economic gains vs. America Putin had secured in Central Asia, I was leaning toward declaring Putin the 'Master Bush Player'... but the most recent events have lead me to reconsider and - by a narrow decision - assign Mushariff the title.)

As always --- it's SELDOM in America's national strategic interests to coddle Dictators, or try to delude ourselves that they make reliable 'allies'.

Not in Pakistan, not in Egypt, not in Iraq, not in Russia. In fact, pretty much not ever, anywhere.
