I highly recommend Fromkin's A Peace to End all Peace: The Making of the Modern Middle East. I've actually read that one, although I don't have your academic memory capability. With me, the details seem to stay in memory for about 10 minutes then get replaced by the desire for a hamburger or perhaps anticipation of the start of a football game. However, that book, and the Leon Uris novel Exodus are it for my research on ME history! Linda Heard, that article's writer, hates everything US and loves everything Arabia. I imagine she gets paid well.....
