"Unfortunately the government spends SS as it comes in on the deficit and may never pay it back."

They'll pay it back pal. As a boomer, the largest voting demographic EVER, we're going to DEMAND it, and the pols will DO it. We don't care if they have to sell our entire ridiculous military to China and India and all our nukes and missiles to Venezuela - we're going to GET the SS we've paid in and more..

Unfortunately the government spends SS as it comes in on the deficit and may never pay it back.

They spend the money they borrow from virtually everyone in the world (treasury bonds) as well. Does that mean they don't have to pay it back? If a company works on a credit line does it mean they don't have to pay it back? If you have a mortgage but pay bills before you pay off your total debt does that mean you will never pay it?

SS is just like any other government financial obligation... except it has the unusual aspect that it is actually running a surplus. That makes it really hard for people to understand... inflow exceeding outflow in a strange government concept for a lot of Republicans.

But back to the main point; it the wars had a dedicated tax there would at least be transparency, as there is with SS.
