"Okay, so just what are those "certain political goals?" TIA"

I would offer that back in 2004 one of the political goals was to stay in power. Fear sells and rallying around the chief during times of crisis is a proven tactic. There is little doubt in my mind that the Administration played, and continues to play, the terror card every chance it gets.

It was this President who said just two weeks ago that if Iran only got the knowledge of making a bomb we were in a World War III situation......

my goodness. Such hyperbole.

If he feels that way about Iran, how about Pakistan? They have Nukes. World War III?

The goal is to crush the "welfare state" by bankrupting the country. Sounds more than a bit far-fetched, doesn't it ? Well, that's the situation. Spend freely on war without restraint, cut taxes to gain short term political advantage, cut business deals with cronies without competitive bid, drive up the national debt to obscene levels, and then dump the whole mess on the opposition "guy" who will inherit the blame and the oval office. This can be achieved only by expanding the powers of the Executive, and that's what's been done. Get in, get the money, forget about the rest. Terrorism, abortion, welfare fraud - all these are tools to manipulate the masses and cripple Congress - who stands ready for the patsy role of "being soft on (fill in the blank), should they resist Executive power. This whole process is Cheney, Cheney, Cheney. Bush is a wooden-headed little boy whose strings are held tightly by the man in the next seat.
