If people wonder why John Edwards resonates with a lot of people (and will with more if the economy dumps), think about what you just said. Retirement security is failing, tradiional manufacturing and support jobs leaving the Country, support networks crumbling.....many people are worried and some are downright scared. And it isn't the terrorists that they are scared of.
