Many doctors might see their career choice as a calling, esp. in the beginning, but the money is a big factor as well (esp. since it costs so much to become a doctor).

I think you can be a good doctor without necessarily seeing it as a calling. The attitude can be more one of a committed professional, than "one who is called".

In this case its not just a shortage of either "called", or highly professional doctors, but a shortage of warm bodies with the necessary training. Part of the reason is that while these doctors don't go hungry they aren't paid a lot for someone with their level of skill and education. In the US they get paid much more, but than in the US medical education is more expensive so to a lesser extent we sometimes have doctor shortages, at least in specific fields in specific places, as well.
