Sorry nadine....the US does not fit your narrow defintion..... We all strive for things that are seen as good by our respective cultures. mercedes dior ipod gucci ect........... that is consumerism. as to one standard in judging merit...what might that standard be ?money? Yet many women are paid less then men for the same job...and lets not mention how much some one without a green card gets paid. You have set an unachievable goal as your definition of a good liberal. Lets try A good liberal is someone who is tollerant of the opinions and beliefs of others.
