It might be that they don't have the ability to manufacture. It's not that chimps prefer to live in trees, they don't know how to do anything else. Humans are like chimps. Some chimps can figure out how to make CDMA. Others can figure out how to put up antenna towers. Others can't figure out much at all so stay living in trees.

Many chimps who see a chimp trying to do something good will steal it from them [spreading wealth is considered an ethical thing to do] or simply smash it, or kill them as being evil-doing aristocrats.
