Back rubbing may be excellent for inducing the placebo effect.
> Maybe it's more than a placebo effect too. There are endorphins. With things like running, acupuncture and such back-rubbing as would leave large marks in the skin, pain receptors get dosed up with endorphins so people feel good.

Placebo effects are no doubt a bit more than imagination too. Brains are flooded with chemistry and merely telling somebody this magical pill will make them feel better maybe releases peptides, serotonin, melatonin or other which makes them all relaxed and happy.
