Royalties, taxes and fund fees all kill...

Mutual fund holders in Canada pay on average 2.25% of NAV. Assuming LT market returns are 8%, the real take should be quoted as 28% of returns(in this example). At least 68% of the funds will under perform the market to boot. Many funds charge more than 2.25% to take your money as well. And all funds charge you whether they make you money or not...

I am in the wrong business.

Eric - appreciate the eye opener on how material and sensitive the royalty structure can be on an operation.

PS never owned a fund apart from ETF's

maybe the gov should just wave the royalty fee & instead request the extraction companies to post a compliance bond to rectify the environmental impacts.

just think the mountains in West Virginia would not look like standing rotted apple cores, exhausted of it's coal, only to have the coal companies exit with it's mess left behind.
the area around Gillette, Wy looks like sh*t today with the coal & ngas extraction (with the coal powered plants & the airborne particulate matter, Wyoming is the worst state per capita in the US).
in the Silver Valley where I DO LIVE, the heavy metals above are an on- going problem affecting everyone & everything downstream. this is not to say there is a problem the current mining but every time sh*t does happen the locals & the State of Idaho is jumping in the Fed's sh*t asking for a corrective action fix on the environmental damages.

just a few things I saw along the way...

EC thanks for that in depth explanation. Couldnt have done better myself VBG
Hopefully they will see the light down there before the mining co's all pack up and move to greener patures. The USA will at that point not be only looking for oil supplies. Thats politicians for you, many a bunch of degenerates who dont even know the laws which are in the books that they are supposed to protect and enforce.
Another topic,Lou Dobbs is trying to shake things up down there, I hope the electorate listens.
Not too much dif here..just think "gentleman farmers" political lackies making big $$ for nothing thru rights to public lands.
Acquaintance of mine in the oil patch Alberta...lay offs and cutbacks left and right because of the money grab, being kept very quiet.
