That's one way to look at it. I think it turned out to be a dead end. What would have been better is if we never discovered oil and the automotive industry spent all their energies perfecting battery technology. Imagine where we'd be now, 80 years later, with 80 years of car battery tech improvements and if all of our infrastructure was focused on cars with rapid recharging stations everywhere.
