Mindmeld, > Why would that not jibe? Of course, they are profiting big time.

The high price of oil is a double-edged sword. Of course you drive the need toward alternative fuels and conservation. But in the meantime the ones pumping the oil out of the ground are making the big money and spending it in ways that will come around and bite us in the ass.

You can counter this by passing a punitive tax on oil consumption, but that would never go over well with the public, much less an economy that is still regarded as being in a recession.

Or you can pay people not to drive or not to buy gas-guzzlers. That way you can drive down demand, drive down the price of oil, and deprive Big Oil, the Middle East, and Hugo Chavez of their "obscene profits." But once again, you run into the same risk as before, namely complacency which comes with cheap oil.

mm,

I can't wait for the day that the Middle East is a forgotten desert full of inconsequential people who have no power or money to harm the rest of the world. I pray that I will see that day during my lifetime.

That may very well happen in our lifetimes (that oil pretty much runs out even in places like Saudi Arabia) but I doubt that will be the end of Wahabi type crazies. A person who does not value his own life can do a lot of damage in societies where the assumption is that the individual (however deranged he may be) at least values his own life...
