None came close to oil as far as accessibility, volume, price, energy per pound, ease of distribution etc. And most importantly, fairly easy technology to master and mass produce.

Yes, but I think the point MM is making that had there not been oil, we would have been forced to follow a different course......and that course may have been better. Had we not used oil but steam instead, most cities would have relatively clean air and not smog.
