Tobagojack, Is the capitalist China really going to be much different from capitalist USA? I don't know whether it will be able to retain its old values. There will be Chinese versions of OJs. -Arun

TJ, a vacuum cleaner would be better as sweeping will leave small amount bits of glass, which are worst because they are hard to see, while big bits are quite obvious. Street sweepers can be small and Saint Quentin La Poterie had a street sweeper machine which drove around. But it had a limited range of places it could go. There was also a man who roamed around with a broom collecting rubbish. Our landlord sometimes carried a bag to collect rubbish on her walks. I pick up rubbish at times. It would be a lot easier to stop people breaking bottles than cleaning it up afterwards. A community producing people who think it a good idea to break bottles is a sick society. They will do worse crimes when they get a chance. Maybe I'll end up begging to be allowed to live in Hong Kong or China one day, to escape crime and filth. That would be richly ironic. At present, I'd rather live in Japan, where it is already clean and pleasant. A community where you can't walk barefoot happily is not a healthy community. In England and France, they have dog poop everywhere as well as broken glass. Mqurice
