That is simply not true ! Everyone is quite ready to use mark to market prices and everyone is doing so.... Hence the write- downs.

You miss my point . Marking to market is no big deal and does not necessarily imply permanent losses. There have been real losses, the extent of them not yet clear, but they have been and will be adequately provided for. I suggest that the market (or market sentiment) is over-reacting as is its habit.

It reminds me of years ago when the fear was the banks' exposure to "third world debt". What a straw man that turned out to be.
