"In a sense it does. To do any of the things you have suggested would be political suicide for any politician to even discuss. So it is silly to suggest it as a real possibility."

As much as it pains me to AGREE with Tim - at one time, it would have been political suicide for pols to spend the SS surplus as general revenue, but somehow, now they do and it's just business as usual. If you remember back to when it first occurred, there were a few pols pointing out the "crime", but, the vast majority of both parties were just saying, "Nothing to see here, let's just move along.."

What exactly do you think I've discussed? Changing the funding or accounting of social security probably would not be political suicide if it was done for a reason and if they payments didn't stop.

About the only one of many things that I've mentioned in this conversation that would be political suicide is canceling or slashing social security payouts while keeping the tax (in fact canceling or slashing them would probably be political suicide even if the tax is eliminated). And even for that one thing - Having a program be too popular to cancel doesn't equal, even "in a sense", having a bond obligation to the future beneficiaries of the program. It certainly isn't something that would be defaulting on debt.
