Here's an interview where he's grilled about about race/electability..although Obama can be more long-winded than I'd like on the stump, his answers to these uncomfortable questions tend to be clear and concise..ie: "in Illinois I won rural counties." Obama: Race won't bring me down JASON CLAYWORTH REGISTER STAFF WRITER November 9, 2007 The issue of race will not bring him down in Iowa, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said today. “There’s no doubt that race is always a factor in American society, there’s no denying that but I think we’ve made enormous progress in a generation, certainly since I was born in the early '60s,” Obama, who is black, said. "And I think that people right now are much more concerned with who’s going to look out for them, who’s going to fight for them, who’s going to bring about the kind of change that’s needed in Washington.” Obama made the statements after questions about race during a taping of Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Press.” Des Moines Register columnist David Yepsen asked him if he will use Iowa’s “lily white” demographics as an excuse if he doesn’t do well in the Jan. 3 caucus. Obama said no. Asked if voters are ready to vote for a black man, Obama pointed out that in past Illinois elections, he has been able to win parts of Illinois that have similar demographics to Iowa. “I’ve heard this before. I think it gives voters too little credit. We’re confident we’re going to do well,” Obama said. Whites make up 94 percent of Iowa’s nearly 3 million residents, according to the 2000 U.S. census. Blacks make up 2.1 percent. Illinois’s 12.4 million population is almost 71 percent white, while almost 15 percent are black. "Iowa Press" airs at 7:30 p.m. today at 11:30 a.m. Sunday on Iowa Public Television. The interview also can be viewed at: www.iptv.org
