Mike,

My technical error in saying that Bush didn't appoint him is irrelevant. I was thinking in terms of who brought him in to begin with and forgot about the re-appointments from those that followed.

I think it doesn't matter who appointed him or re-appointed him and I think you know that too. That's why you lose credibility with me by harping on it.

It's a diversion from the main point which is that the problem with the dollar is Greenspan's fault and not Reagan's, Bush's, Clinton's, or Bush's. Rolling bubbles through the late 80s, 90s, and 2000s keep requiring negative real rates and a further expansion of money to keep the system afloat. Those policies were Greenspan's choice and that's is why the long term trend for the dollar is down, not cyclical decisions and budgets that impact currencies in the short term.

Norman Mailer is dead at 84. Loved him, hated him. Which means he was a great author. "The Naked and The Dead" was one of the all time great war novels and his story about learning bull fighting in New York City was a hoot. His political writing was sometimes great and sometimes silly, but always an easy read. He did biographies of serial killers and countries (Egypt) that were interesting reading, even if you didn't like the subject.

His need to imitate the life of Ernest Hemingway made him a bit of a joke, from his bullfighting, his multiple wives, to his boxing, to his hard drinking. He was only good at the latter. I almost laughed myself to hiccups when he tried to pick a fight with Willie Pastrano, the former light heavyweight champ. Oh, yeah, Norman, you would last long enough for the ref to count to ten, and Willie was not a great puncher.

So, I have mixed feelings about his work and life, but I'm sorry to see him go.
