No.........I don't think it is entirely to appease his base, I think his reasons for shunning conventional patriotism is more complicated than that. Maybe he believes that their should be no national boundaries and that the world should be one great big happy village. Maybe his fondest dream is to work towards realizing that goal? Or maybe he believes that inanimate objects are an impediment to understanding and tolerance? I really don't know? He needs to explain himself better than he has and make us all understand the reasoning behind his actions.
