It's more economic to use the methanol as methanol than by losing lots of energy and turning it to petrol. Or, use the methanol as chemical feedstock.

The synthetic petrol plant was part of the stupid "Think Big" pork barrel era of NZ when many $billions were poured down the drain.

Government people were "solving the problem" of a "shortage" of fuel. As usual, they wasted a lot of money and achieved nothing.

Perhaps there are places where it is economic to turn gas to gasoline. But I think gas to methanol for fuel cells is probably a better bet. Or methanol for blending with ethanol and gasoline. Or as pure methanol [perhaps with 1% de-ionized water for anti-corrosion] for Otto engines [such as I operated for a couple of years in the early 1980s].

In that link you gave, they convert 1000 tonnes of methanol to 430 tonnes of petrol and LPG. Since methanol has a lot less energy than petrol, it's equivalent to about 600 tonnes being turned into 400 tonnes. That's quite a loss so the gasoline output has to be worth a LOT more than the methanol input per tonne.
